Prehistory: The World Before Writing
Consider this: if the entire span of human existence were compressed into a single twenty-four-hour day, the first written records would appear at about 11:47 PM. Everything before that — the invention of stone tools, the control of fire, the colonization of every continent except Antarctica, the domestication of plants and animals, the building of the first villages, the creation of art and music and religious belief — all of it happened in the long, dark hours before writing. What Is Prehistory?
Prehistory is the period of human existence before the invention of writing systems. Its length varies by region — in Southwest Asia and Egypt, the historical period begins around 3200 BCE; in parts of the Pacific, prehistory extends well into the nineteenth century CE. But for most of the world, prehistory covers at least 99.5 percent of the time that humans have existed.
The Three-Age System
The foundational framework for understanding prehistory is the Three-Age System, first proposed by Danish archaeologist Christian Jürgensen Thomsen in the 1830s. Based on his work organizing the collections of the National Museum of Denmark, Thomsen divided prehistoric technology into three successive ages: Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age. The Control of Fire
The control of fire was one of the most transformative innovations in human prehistory. The Upper Paleolithic Revolution
Around 50,000 years ago, the archaeological record of Eurasia undergoes a dramatic transformation associated with the arrival of anatomically modern humans. This Upper Paleolithic revolution saw the appearance of blade technology (long, thin stone blades struck from prepared cores), bone and antler tools (including needles, harpoons, and spear-throwers), personal ornaments (beads, pendants, and perforated animal teeth), and, most spectacularly, art.
The cave paintings of Chauvet, Lascaux, Altamira, and dozens of other sites represent the earliest known representational art, some dating to over 35,000 years ago. The Neolithic Revolution
Around 10,000 BCE, in a handful of regions around the world, humans began doing something unprecedented: they stopped moving. The Neolithic revolution — the transition from hunting and gathering to farming and settled village life — transformed every aspect of human existence.
The First Farmers
The earliest evidence for plant domestication comes from the Fertile Crescent of Southwest Asia, where wild emmer wheat, barley, lentils, and peas were brought under cultivation between 10,000 and 8,500 BCE. The process was gradual — hunter-gatherers began managing wild stands of grain before they deliberately planted fields. Göbekli Tepe in southeastern Turkey, a monumental ritual complex built by hunter-gatherers around 9500 BCE, demonstrates that the social and ideological changes of the Neolithic preceded full-scale agriculture. The site’s massive T-shaped limestone pillars, each weighing up to twenty tons, were carved, transported, and erected by people who had not yet domesticated plants or animals.

The Neolithic also brought profound social changes. Evidence for increasing social inequality — larger houses, richer burials, differential access to exotic goods — appears in the later Neolithic. The cemetery at Varna in Bulgaria, dating to around 4500 BCE, contains burials with extraordinary wealth — one male burial included over 3,000 gold objects, including jewelry, tools, and a gold penis sheath — demonstrating that social hierarchy had emerged long before the first cities.
Megaliths
The Neolithic and Copper Age of Europe produced the most enduring prehistoric monuments: megaliths. Stonehenge, constructed between 3000 and 2000 BCE in several phases, is the most famous, but it is one of thousands of megalithic monuments across Europe. The passage tombs of Newgrange (Ireland), Gavrinis (France), and Maeshowe (Orkney) were oriented to mark the winter solstice sunrise. The Bronze Age saw the emergence of the first stratified societies in Europe, with warrior elites controlling trade routes and metal production.
