Landscape Archaeology: Reading the Land
The land beneath your feet is not natural. That gently sloping hill you walk up every morning was terraced by medieval farmers who carried baskets of soil uphill generation after generation. That stream you cross on your hike follows a channel that was dug — deliberately straightened and deepened — by Roman engineers draining a floodplain for agriculture. Celtic Fields and Roman Centuriation
In northwestern Europe, the earliest field systems are the so-called “Celtic fields” of the Bronze Age and Iron Age — small, roughly rectangular fields bounded by low banks of stone and earth. These fields were laid out before the introduction of the moldboard plow and represent the small-scale, intensive agriculture of prehistoric farming communities. From the Neolithic of Britain to the Inca of the Andes, societies created processional ways — linear paths along which ritual processions moved through the landscape. The Avenue at Stonehenge, a 1.5-mile-long earthwork connecting the monument to the River Avon, is one of the earliest known examples. The Avenue was aligned with the summer solstice sunrise, suggesting that the midsummer solstice procession was a central ritual for the builders of Stonehenge.
The Hohokam Irrigation Systems
